As promised, this follow-up to the 10 Best Free VST Plugins list (that is, just effects and processors) is all about synths. Some of these synths are early projects from designers who have gone on to work for larger companies making some of the most high-profile VST instruments; others are passion projects from solo sonic adventurers who simply want to share their skills with the music-making.

Now this plugin has been around the block for quite some time now and I'm not sure why I haven't recommended it earlier but as they say: Better late than never.
Given my newfound love for it I'm going to showcase a couple of badass banks and show you why it's still a heavy hitter, capable of modern premium sounds although it's completely free to use without any restrictions.
Synth1 was created by Ichiro Toda. It's modelled after the Clavia Nord Lead 2 Red Synthesizer. It's a super light-weight plugin and even the crappiest of computers will be able to run several instances at once without crashing due to CPU and RAM limitations.
